Virus & Scams - "Microsoft Security Alert" Window

Updated:

On a Chromebook, a browser hijack occurs when a website goes full screen and takes the users device captive while they are browsing the internet. The widow will often prompt you to call a support number or download an anti-virus software. Do not fear, your Chromebook is secure and the issue can easily be remedied. Your Chromebook simply cannot get a virus - the operating system itself protects you.
To resolve:

  1. Shut down the Chromebook and then sign back in.
  2. Place an IT ticket to note the occurrence and report what website you were visiting when the hijack occurred.
  3. Resume operation of the device as normal
If your screen is locked at any point in a way that prevents you from doing normal browsing, contact IT for a hardware reset.

Be sure to alert IT of suspicious activity!
